Celebrating Hinamatsuri at Cha-Ami

🎎

At Cha-Ami Japanese Cultural Center, we are delighted to celebrate Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) and share this beautiful Japanese tradition with our community. This year, we have proudly displayed our Hina Ningyō (雛人形) dolls at the center, and we invite you to come and see them!

What is Hinamatsuri?

Hinamatsuri is celebrated every year on March 3rd in Japan. Also known as “Girls’ Day” or “Doll Festival,” it is a special day to pray for the health, happiness, and future success of girls.

Families with daughters display a set of ornamental dolls called Hina Ningyō, which represent the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians of the ancient Japanese imperial court during the Heian period.

The Meaning Behind the Dolls

The traditional doll display is arranged on a red, tiered platform:

  • The top tier features the Emperor and Empress.

  • Lower tiers include court ladies, musicians, ministers, and helpers.

  • Accessories such as miniature furniture, carriage sets, and traditional tools are often included.

These dolls are not toys, but cherished seasonal decorations passed down through generations. The display is both elegant and symbolic, reflecting wishes for prosperity and protection.

Hinamatsuri Traditions

In Japan, families often celebrate with special seasonal foods such as:

  • Chirashi sushi

  • Hishimochi (diamond-shaped rice cakes)

  • Hina arare (colorful rice crackers)

The festival has roots in ancient purification rituals, where dolls were used to symbolically carry away bad luck.

Visit Our Hina Display

We warmly invite you to visit Cha-Ami Japanese Cultural Center to see our Hinaningyō display in person. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience Japanese seasonal culture up close and learn more about its history and meaning.

Whether you are familiar with Japanese traditions or discovering them for the first time, we hope this display brings joy and cultural appreciation to our community.

We look forward to welcoming you!
