Celebrating Community: A Busy and Joyful May

Updated: 3 days ago

We’re grateful to be part of so many meaningful community events across the Twin Cities this spring. It has been wonderful to connect with friends, families, and organizations who share an appreciation for Japanese culture and international friendship.

This year, the Lunar New Year Celebration we were invited which was originally planned earlier in the season could not take place as scheduled due to fear and disruption happened in Minneapolis. As a result, the celebration was postponed and eventually held in the spring at Rosedale Center. We were grateful that the event could still happen and bring people together. Cha-Ami hosted an origami table where visitors of all ages enjoyed hands-on cultural activities and learned traditional paper folding.

We participated in the Cherry Tree Celebration hosted by the Saint Paul - Nagasaki Sister City Committee. The event celebrated the beauty of the cherry blossoms as well as the long-standing friendship between Saint Paul and Nagasaki. Cha-Ami was grateful to share origami activities with attendees during the celebration and connect with many community members.

Cha-Ami also hosted a special children’s event celebrating Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day). Families and children came together to learn about Samurai. We enjoyed crafts and Japanese snacks at the end. It was heartwarming to see children enjoying the spirit of Kodomo no Hi at Cha-Ami.

Then on May 10th, which also happened to be Mother’s Day weekend, we joined the Nicollet Island Cherry Tree Festival hosted by the Minneapolis - Ibaraki Sister City Association. The festival brought together many visitors to enjoy performances and community activities along the beautiful Mississippi riverfront. Cha-Ami once again hosted an origami table, welcoming families and visitors throughout the day.

Members of Wa no Kai also enjoyed a picnic during the festival, creating a warm and joyful gathering. It was a perfect way to celebrate both spring and Mother’s Day together.

Wa no Kai, our gathering and support program for seniors. Wa no Kai provides opportunities for connection, cultural activities, and community among older adults. We sincerely appreciate all of the organizers, volunteers, and participants who make these events possible. Being part of these celebrations reminds us how important cultural connections and community relationships are in bringing people together.

We look forward to participating in more events throughout the year and continuing to share Japanese culture with the Twin Cities community.
