Students Explore Japanese Calligraphy at Cha-Ami

On June 3, Cha-Ami Japanese Cultural Center had the pleasure of welcoming a group of 22 high school students as part of a themed educational field trip focused on Japanese culture and the imaginative world that has inspired generations of young people.

During their visit, students participated in a hands-on Japanese calligraphy workshop led by Shimano-Sensei. The session introduced students to the art of shodō (書道), the traditional Japanese practice of brush writing that combines artistic expression with mindfulness, concentration, and discipline.

Shimano-Sensei demonstrated the proper use of traditional tools, including the brush (fude), ink (sumi), and calligraphy paper. Students then had the opportunity to practice basic brush techniques and create their own calligraphy pieces.

We would like to thank the students and teachers who visited us. It was a joy to spend the afternoon together, and we hope they enjoyed learning Japanese calligraphy as much as we enjoyed sharing it.
