This intimate gathering is perfect for anyone interested in Japanese textiles, sewing, or rethinking fashion through reuse and tradition.
Instructor: Marsha Theis
About the Instructor
Marsha has been sewing, designing, and making clothes since childhood. She has been creating pieced garments for over 30 years, long before it became fashionable, drawn to the unique character and visual interest that piecing brings to clothing.
Her work evolved naturally toward sustainability. Deeply opposed to “fast fashion,” Marsha believes we must make better use of the textiles we already have, as textile manufacturing is highly damaging to the environment. She began using preowned garments both for their beauty and their environmental value.
About ten years ago, she purchased a used, unwearable kimono and incorporated it into a garment. She immediately fell in love with the look and history of Japanese textiles and has been working with them ever since. At this talk, Marsha will bring and discuss several garments she has created using vintage Japanese textiles.
